Local conditions

Centennial fireplaces have mountain problems

A fireplace in Centennial works at elevation, in dry cold and wide temperature swings few other regions see. Altitude, pine smoke, snow and long idle months in second homes do the damage here — this is what we check on every visit.

Pine creosote builds fast

Mountain and foothill homes burn what grows here — pine and other softwoods — and softwood smoke lays down creosote faster than hardwood does, especially in slow, overnight burns. In Centennial that buildup is the main flue-fire risk we clean out. If you burn daily for heat, an annual cleaning is the minimum, not the maximum.

Snow load on caps and vents

Heavy snow sits on caps, bends lightweight covers, and can bury low vent terminations on direct-vent units in Arapahoe County. A buried or crushed vent means poor draft, soot and shutdowns right when you need heat most. After big storms we check caps and terminations first — before assuming a part inside has failed.

Wildfire smoke days

Late-summer smoke changes how Centennial burns. On bad air days, wood burning is restricted and discouraged, and many homeowners lean on gas instead — which is why gas units that sat unused all summer get found out in the smoke season, not winter. We service both, so whichever fuel you rely on is ready.

Wood heat is serious heat

In mountain and foothill homes, a wood stove or fireplace is often a primary heat source, not an occasional pleasure fire. That means longer burns, more ash, faster wear on gaskets, baffles and catalysts, and no patience for a unit that underperforms. In Arapahoe County we service wood units like the heaters they are.

Centennial sits in Arapahoe County, and the ZIP list at the bottom of this page covers 6 serviceable ZIP codes — 80015 through 80122. The closest served neighbors are Greenwood Village, Englewood, Cherry Hills Village, and every one of them is covered by the same crews, the same day, under the same number: (888) 257-9181.

Questions

Asked the way Centennial asks

My gas fireplace won't stay lit at this elevation — is it broken?

Often it is not a broken part at all — it is altitude. Thin air weakens the pilot flame, so the thermocouple cools, thinks the flame is out, and shuts the gas off. Dust in the pilot makes it worse. A tech cleans the pilot, tests the thermocouple, and checks the altitude setup before replacing anything.

Our cabin sat empty for months — can we just light the fireplace when we arrive?

Please have it checked first. Months sitting empty in Colorado mountain country means animals may have nested in the flue, dust has settled in the pilot, and caps may have taken snow damage — all invisible from the room. An inspection and cleaning before the first fire is the difference between a cozy arrival and a cabin full of smoke.

Can I burn wood on wildfire smoke days?

Follow the local air-quality guidance for that day — on bad smoke days, wood burning is restricted or strongly discouraged across much of Colorado, and adding fireplace smoke to wildfire smoke helps nobody. Many Centennial homeowners switch to gas on those days instead. If your gas unit has sat idle, have it serviced before you need to rely on it.

Can you convert my wood fireplace to gas?

Yes — gas inserts and log sets are the most common conversion we do in Centennial, and at altitude the new unit gets set up for elevation from day one. An insert is the efficient route: sealed, remote-lit, and no creosote or hauling wood. Start with a free estimate and we will measure your firebox and walk through the options honestly.

There are cracks in my chimney crown — is that urgent at elevation?

Worth fixing promptly, yes. A cracked crown lets water into the masonry, and at Centennial elevation that water freezes hard, expands, and widens the crack every cycle — small crown damage becomes split masonry faster here than in mild climates. We repair the crown and check the cap and flashing in the same visit, before water reaches the flue.

Do you give prices over the phone?

No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
