A fireplace in Sausalito lives with California's mix all at once — ground that moves, air that corrodes or dries, summers that idle it and winters that work it. This is what we actually find here, and what we check on every visit.
In the Sierra foothills and higher country around California, wood fireplaces and stoves do real heating work through snow season, and that means real creosote. Glazed buildup from smoldering fires is a flue-fire risk, not a cosmetic issue. Cleaning and inspection before the burn season are the fire prevention these systems are built around.
In metro areas, air-quality rules restrict wood burning on bad-air days, so the fireplaces that work every evening are gas. That is why gas inserts and log sets are the common conversion in Sausalito: sealed, remote-lit, usable on no-burn days, and they use the existing chimney as the chase. We measure the firebox and walk through the options on a free estimate.
Newer sealed construction in Sausalito holds its air so tightly that a fireplace can struggle to draw, spill smoke at startup, or pull a downdraft down a cold flue. The fireplace is often fine — the house pressure is the problem. We diagnose the draw properly instead of selling parts, and correct the cause we actually find.
Plenty of Sausalito buyers inherit a fireplace with no history — original masonry, a conversion nobody documented, or a gas unit that sat idle for years. In seismic country that unknown matters more, not less. An inspection before the first fire tells you exactly what you have, what is sound, and what needs attention before it is used.

Cracked or missing mortar, leaning or separated sections, cracked flue tiles and a split crown are the warning signs, and earthquakes and freeze-thaw cycles both widen them over time. Water follows the cracks in, and heat follows them out toward framing. We check the masonry on every inspection in Sausalito and tell you plainly what is repairable and what needs a mason's rebuild.
On bad-air days in metro areas, wood burning is restricted, so a wood fireplace sits unused on exactly the cold, still evenings you want it. A gas insert or log set is the common answer: sealed, instant, and not a wood fire, so it stays usable when wood is restricted. We measure your firebox and price the conversion on a free estimate.
Yes — quietly and constantly. Metal caps, dampers, grates and vent terminations corrode faster in salt-carrying air, and a rusted-through cap lets rain straight down the flue while corroded venting becomes a safety issue. An inspection checks the metal parts most companies skip, so corrosion in Sausalito gets caught while it is still a small repair instead of a replacement.
The common causes are a cold flue at startup, a blocked or undersized flue, a clogged cap, or a house sealed so tightly the fireplace cannot draw — that last one is frequent in newer Sausalito construction. A tech checks them in order, on the spot, and fixes the actual cause instead of selling you parts at random for a pressure problem.
Yes. Gas inserts and log sets go into existing fireboxes, new direct-vent units go into renovations and additions, and we install and service outdoor fireplaces and fire pits — with clearances checked carefully where dry landscaping sits close. We handle sizing, venting, gas and electric runs and finishing, one crew from start to first fire. Start with a free estimate.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
