Every fireplace service, one Park City call

The six services Park City homeowners call us for most — from a gas fireplace that will not stay lit at altitude, to a wood flue loaded with pine creosote that needs a proper cleaning.

Fireplace opened up for repair with the burner exposed Repair Fireplace Repair

Any fireplace, any failure — diagnosed first, then fixed with the right parts. In Summit County we see the pattern constantly: a unit that sat idle in a second home, then failed on the first cold night.

Thermopile, thermocouple, valve or board — tested at your elevation, and replaced only if it failed. Pilot that won't stay lit, dead remote, weak or lazy flame: gas systems diagnosed safely and repaired to code.

Soot, dust and that stale closed-up smell removed from the firebox, glass and burner — the deep clean that clears fast-building softwood creosote before it becomes a flue fire risk.

Local conditions

Park City fireplaces have mountain problems

A fireplace in Park City works at elevation, in dry cold and wide temperature swings few other regions see. Altitude, pine smoke, snow and long idle months in second homes do the damage here — this is what we check on every visit.

Pine creosote builds fast

Mountain and foothill homes burn what grows here — pine and other softwoods — and softwood smoke lays down creosote faster than hardwood does, especially in slow, overnight burns. In Park City that buildup is the main flue-fire risk we clean out. If you burn daily for heat, an annual cleaning is the minimum, not the maximum.

Freeze-thaw still cracks crowns

The dry mountain climate is kinder to masonry than wet regions are, but it does not spare it. Water that gets into a crown or mortar joint freezes hard at elevation, expands, and cracks it wider each cycle. In Park City we check crowns and joints on every inspection — caught early, it is a small repair.

Dry air, dusty pilots

Mountain air is dry, and dry air carries dust into everything — pilot orifices, burner ports and air shutters included. A gas fireplace in Park City can fail from a dusty pilot alone, with every major part still sound. A thorough cleaning and an altitude check fix most of those calls without replacing a single part.

New to the house?

Plenty of Park City buyers — and plenty of cabin buyers — inherit a fireplace or stove they know nothing about: no service history, no idea whether the altitude setup or the flue is right. An inspection before the first fire tells you exactly what you have, what is safe, and what needs doing first.

Questions

Asked the way Park City asks

My gas fireplace won't stay lit at this elevation — is it broken?

Often it is not a broken part at all — it is altitude. Thin air weakens the pilot flame, so the thermocouple cools, thinks the flame is out, and shuts the gas off. Dust in the pilot makes it worse. A tech cleans the pilot, tests the thermocouple, and checks the altitude setup before replacing anything.

Does a gas fireplace need special setup for high elevation?

Yes. Gas appliances are rated and adjusted for an elevation range, and a unit set up for low elevation will burn dirty, soot the glass, and struggle to keep a pilot at Park City elevation. The gas and air setup has to match the altitude it will actually run at — we check and adjust that as part of any installation or repair.

Snow is piled around my vent and cap — should I worry?

Yes — clear it before you rely on the fireplace. Snow can bury a direct-vent termination, crush a light cap, and block the draft a gas or wood unit needs to vent safely. In Summit County we see shutdowns and soot problems after every big storm that trace straight back to a buried or bent vent, not a failed part.

Can I burn wood on wildfire smoke days?

Follow the local air-quality guidance for that day — on bad smoke days, wood burning is restricted or strongly discouraged across much of Utah, and adding fireplace smoke to wildfire smoke helps nobody. Many Park City homeowners switch to gas on those days instead. If your gas unit has sat idle, have it serviced before you need to rely on it.

Can you convert my wood fireplace to gas?

Yes — gas inserts and log sets are the most common conversion we do in Park City, and at altitude the new unit gets set up for elevation from day one. An insert is the efficient route: sealed, remote-lit, and no creosote or hauling wood. Start with a free estimate and we will measure your firebox and walk through the options honestly.

Do you give prices over the phone?

No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
