When a Whiting fireplace quits in January, it is rarely random — a thermocouple worn thin, a pilot clogged after idle summer months, or water that froze in the crown and split the mortar. We show you what failed and fix it with the right part.
From fall inspections before the first fire to midwinter repairs when a pilot gives out, these are the six fireplace services Whiting homeowners book with us.
RepairFireplace Repair
Any fireplace, any failure — diagnosed first, then fixed with the right parts. If it smokes into the room, lights sometimes, or quits mid-evening, we trace the fault to the part — not the guess.
Pilot out, remote dead, flame weak and yellow — the Whiting gas calls we run every week of the season. Pilot that won't stay lit, dead remote, weak or lazy flame: gas systems diagnosed safely and repaired to code.
Soot, dust and that stale closed-up smell removed from the firebox, glass and burner — the deep clean for a gas unit that sat shut through a humid summer and smells stale when opened.
Firebox, flue, venting and controls checked end to end, with a plain-language report. Buying, selling, or just moved into an older Whiting home? The inspection is where the facts come from.
A new gas fireplace or an outdoor fire feature, done right: sizing, venting, gas and electric runs, finishing — one crew, start to first fire. Gas inserts in existing masonry fireboxes are the Whiting favorite — sealed, remote-lit, and done with creosote for that fireplace.
The annual service that keeps a Whiting gas fireplace lighting first try: full clean, burner and pilot service, safety sensors tested, and a test fire before we leave. The autumn appointment Lake County regulars book before the first cold snap arrives.
Need something else — a damper, a blower, a smoke problem, a bird in the flue? We cover all 27 fireplace specialties. Call (888) 257-9181 and describe it.
Local conditions
Whiting fireplaces have Whiting problems
A fireplace in Whiting works from October to April, then sits idle through humid summer months. Freeze and thaw, wood smoke and deep cold do the damage here. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
A season, not a weekend
From the first fire in October to the last cold night in April, a Whiting fireplace is not decoration — it is a working appliance for months at a stretch. That much use wears igniters, dries gaskets, and builds creosote steadily, which is why an annual service here is maintenance, not a luxury.
Freeze, thaw, repeat
Water gets into a chimney crown, a mortar joint or a hairline crack, then freezes, expands, and pries the masonry wider. Repeat that cycle all winter in Whiting and bricks start to spall, crowns split, and mortar crumbles. We check the crown, joints and flashing on every inspection and point out damage early.
Lake-effect snow belts
Homes in the lake-effect belts — downwind of the Great Lakes in Michigan, Wisconsin, and northern Illinois and Indiana — can get heavy snow while towns an hour away stay clear. Snow buries caps, adds freeze load to masonry, and melts down open flues in a thaw. A sound, screened cap matters more here.
Raccoons & birds in the flue
An open flue in the off-season is shelter. Raccoons, birds and squirrels nest in chimneys across Lake County in spring and summer, and a nest blocks draft, holds moisture, and can push smoke and carbon monoxide into the room if a fire is lit under it. We clear blockages and fit screened caps.

My gas fireplace quit on the coldest night — why does that happen?+
Deep cold is when the fireplace works hardest and when a marginal part finally fails. A thermocouple worn thin, a thermopile putting out too little voltage, or a pilot orifice narrowed by dust can all hold through a mild week and drop out in a cold snap. We test each part in order and replace only what failed.
How often should a wood fireplace be cleaned in Whiting?+
At least once a year if you burn regularly — and sooner if you burn most evenings through a Whiting heating season. Steady wood fires lay down creosote, and the glazed kind builds fastest from slow, smoldering fires. Cleaning removes that buildup before it can ignite, and the visit also checks the liner, cap and damper.
My pilot lights but will not stay lit — what is failing?+
Usually the thermocouple or thermopile. Those sensors sit in the pilot flame and prove heat before the main burner is allowed gas; when they wear out, the valve shuts the pilot down as a safety measure. Dust in the pilot orifice can starve the flame and cause the same symptom, so we clean and test before replacing parts.
There is scratching in my chimney and birds around the cap — what should I do?+
Do not light a fire. Raccoons and birds nest in open flues through spring and summer in Indiana, and a nest blocks the draft and holds moisture against the liner. Lighting under a blockage pushes smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. We remove the blockage, check the flue for damage, and fit a screened cap.
Snow has buried my chimney cap — should I worry about using the fireplace?+
Be careful. In the lake-effect belts a heavy snowfall can bury a cap or block a vent termination, and a fireplace that cannot vent properly can spill exhaust into the room. If the cap is buried or the fireplace burns oddly after a big snow, leave it off until the cap and vent are checked and cleared.
Do you give prices over the phone?+
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
