In Roachdale, winter is not a weekend event — it is months of freeze-thaw on brick, lake snow on the cap, and a fireplace expected to light on the coldest night of the year. We find the exact cause on the spot and fix it the same visit.
From fall inspections before the first fire to midwinter repairs when a pilot gives out, these are the six fireplace services Roachdale homeowners book with us.
RepairFireplace Repair
Any fireplace, any failure — diagnosed first, then fixed with the right parts. In Putnam County we see the same pattern each season: a unit worked hard from October to April, then failed on the coldest night.
Our specialty — and a common fireplace in Roachdale homes, where many wood fireboxes have been converted to gas. Pilot that won't stay lit, dead remote, weak or lazy flame: gas systems diagnosed safely and repaired to code.
Soot, dust and that stale closed-up smell removed from the firebox, glass and burner — the creosote, soot and ash removal that keeps a Putnam County wood burner drafting clean and burning safer.
Firebox, flue, venting and controls checked end to end, with a plain-language report. One visit, one honest report — what is sound, what is cracked, and what can wait until spring.
A new gas fireplace or an outdoor fire feature, done right: sizing, venting, gas and electric runs, finishing — one crew, start to first fire. We handle the whole job — unit, venting, gas line, electric and finish work.
The annual service that keeps a Roachdale gas fireplace lighting first try: full clean, burner and pilot service, safety sensors tested, and a test fire before we leave. Pilot, burner and sensor checks, a full clean, and a test fire — done in one visit, good for the season.
Need something else — a damper, a blower, a smoke problem, a bird in the flue? We cover all 27 fireplace specialties. Call (888) 257-9181 and describe it.
Local conditions
Roachdale fireplaces have Roachdale problems
A fireplace in Roachdale works from October to April, then sits idle through humid summer months. Freeze and thaw, wood smoke and deep cold do the damage here. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
Creosote is the safety story
Wood burning is common across Putnam County, and steady wood heat comes with creosote — tarry buildup inside the flue that hardens into a glazed layer. That layer can ignite, and a chimney fire can crack liners and spread beyond the flue. Regular cleaning removes the buildup before it becomes the emergency.
Freeze, thaw, repeat
Water gets into a chimney crown, a mortar joint or a hairline crack, then freezes, expands, and pries the masonry wider. Repeat that cycle all winter in Roachdale and bricks start to spall, crowns split, and mortar crumbles. We check the crown, joints and flashing on every inspection and point out damage early.
Lake-effect snow belts
Homes in the lake-effect belts — downwind of the Great Lakes in Michigan, Wisconsin, and northern Illinois and Indiana — can get heavy snow while towns an hour away stay clear. Snow buries caps, adds freeze load to masonry, and melts down open flues in a thaw. A sound, screened cap matters more here.
Clay tile liners crack
Many older Roachdale homes were built with clay tile flue liners. The tiles work for decades, then crack from age, repeated heat, and the thermal shock of a very cold flue meeting a hot fire. A cracked liner lets heat and gases reach the masonry and framing, which is exactly what an inspection is for.

Cold fireplace? Warm answer.
Same-day service, free estimates, licensed & insured — and a fireplace that lights when you click the remote.
My pilot lights but will not stay lit — what is failing?+
Usually the thermocouple or thermopile. Those sensors sit in the pilot flame and prove heat before the main burner is allowed gas; when they wear out, the valve shuts the pilot down as a safety measure. Dust in the pilot orifice can starve the flame and cause the same symptom, so we clean and test before replacing parts.
How do I know if my clay tile flue liner is cracked?+
From the room, usually you cannot — cracked tiles are inside the flue, above the firebox. Signs can include smoke smell in upstairs rooms, pieces of tile in the firebox, or a fireplace that drafts poorly after years of good service. An inspection with a flue camera shows the tile condition directly and gives you a plain-language report.
There is scratching in my chimney and birds around the cap — what should I do?+
Do not light a fire. Raccoons and birds nest in open flues through spring and summer in Indiana, and a nest blocks the draft and holds moisture against the liner. Lighting under a blockage pushes smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. We remove the blockage, check the flue for damage, and fit a screened cap.
Can you convert my wood fireplace to gas, or add a gas insert?+
Yes — that conversion is one of the most common jobs in Roachdale, where many homes have a sound masonry firebox and are tired of hauling wood. A sealed gas insert uses the existing chimney as its chase, lights by remote, and ends creosote worries for that fireplace. Start with a free estimate and we will measure the firebox.
Snow has buried my chimney cap — should I worry about using the fireplace?+
Be careful. In the lake-effect belts a heavy snowfall can bury a cap or block a vent termination, and a fireplace that cannot vent properly can spill exhaust into the room. If the cap is buried or the fireplace burns oddly after a big snow, leave it off until the cap and vent are checked and cleared.
Do you give prices over the phone?+
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
