Most Northbrook homes pair an older masonry fireplace with a newer gas insert, or burn wood in a flue lined with clay tile that has seen decades of heat. Our techs service both — creosote, cracked liners, tired igniters — and test-fire before we leave.

A fireplace in Northbrook works from October to April, then sits idle through humid summer months. Freeze and thaw, wood smoke and deep cold do the damage here. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
Many older Northbrook homes were built with clay tile flue liners. The tiles work for decades, then crack from age, repeated heat, and the thermal shock of a very cold flue meeting a hot fire. A cracked liner lets heat and gases reach the masonry and framing, which is exactly what an inspection is for.
An open flue in the off-season is shelter. Raccoons, birds and squirrels nest in chimneys across Cook County in spring and summer, and a nest blocks draft, holds moisture, and can push smoke and carbon monoxide into the room if a fire is lit under it. We clear blockages and fit screened caps.
Plenty of Northbrook homes run both worlds: a working wood fireplace they still enjoy, and a newer gas insert fitted into another firebox — or the same one converted. Each needs different care. Wood needs creosote removal and liner checks; gas needs pilot, burner and sensor service. We service both in one visit.
On a bitter morning, a chimney full of cold, heavy air can push down instead of drawing up, so the first fire in a Northbrook home spills smoke into the room until the flue warms. A blocked cap, a cracked liner, or a house sealed tight for winter makes it worse. We diagnose the cause in order.

Deep cold is when the fireplace works hardest and when a marginal part finally fails. A thermocouple worn thin, a thermopile putting out too little voltage, or a pilot orifice narrowed by dust can all hold through a mild week and drop out in a cold snap. We test each part in order and replace only what failed.
At least once a year if you burn regularly — and sooner if you burn most evenings through a Northbrook heating season. Steady wood fires lay down creosote, and the glazed kind builds fastest from slow, smoldering fires. Cleaning removes that buildup before it can ignite, and the visit also checks the liner, cap and damper.
From the room, usually you cannot — cracked tiles are inside the flue, above the firebox. Signs can include smoke smell in upstairs rooms, pieces of tile in the firebox, or a fireplace that drafts poorly after years of good service. An inspection with a flue camera shows the tile condition directly and gives you a plain-language report.
Real enough that cleaning is scheduled around it. Creosote builds on flue walls with every fire, and a hot fire or a stray spark can ignite the glazed layer, turning the flue itself into a fire that cracks liners and damages masonry. Annual cleaning, burning dry wood, and keeping fires hot rather than smoldering all lower the risk.
Be careful. In the lake-effect belts a heavy snowfall can bury a cap or block a vent termination, and a fireplace that cannot vent properly can spill exhaust into the room. If the cap is buried or the fireplace burns oddly after a big snow, leave it off until the cap and vent are checked and cleared.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
