Most Lombard homes pair an older masonry fireplace with a newer gas insert, or burn wood in a flue lined with clay tile that has seen decades of heat. Our techs service both — creosote, cracked liners, tired igniters — and test-fire before we leave.
From fall inspections before the first fire to midwinter repairs when a pilot gives out, these are the six fireplace services Lombard homeowners book with us.
RepairFireplace Repair
Any fireplace, any failure — diagnosed first, then fixed with the right parts. In Lombard that usually means a worn thermocouple found in deep cold, cracked clay tile, or mortar that freeze and thaw worked loose.
Our specialty — and a common fireplace in Lombard homes, where many wood fireboxes have been converted to gas. Pilot that won't stay lit, dead remote, weak or lazy flame: gas systems diagnosed safely and repaired to code.
Soot, dust and that stale closed-up smell removed from the firebox, glass and burner — the full creosote removal a wood flue needs after a season of steady burning, or the burner and pilot service a gas unit needs.
Firebox, flue, venting and controls checked end to end, with a plain-language report. One visit, one honest report — what is sound, what is cracked, and what can wait until spring.
A new gas fireplace or an outdoor fire feature, done right: sizing, venting, gas and electric runs, finishing — one crew, start to first fire. We handle the whole job — unit, venting, gas line, electric and finish work.
The annual service that keeps a Lombard gas fireplace lighting first try: full clean, burner and pilot service, safety sensors tested, and a test fire before we leave. The autumn appointment DuPage County regulars book before the first cold snap arrives.
Need something else — a damper, a blower, a smoke problem, a bird in the flue? We cover all 27 fireplace specialties. Call (888) 257-9181 and describe it.
Local conditions
Lombard fireplaces have Lombard problems
A fireplace in Lombard works from October to April, then sits idle through humid summer months. Freeze and thaw, wood smoke and deep cold do the damage here. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
A season, not a weekend
From the first fire in October to the last cold night in April, a Lombard fireplace is not decoration — it is a working appliance for months at a stretch. That much use wears igniters, dries gaskets, and builds creosote steadily, which is why an annual service here is maintenance, not a luxury.
Freeze, thaw, repeat
Water gets into a chimney crown, a mortar joint or a hairline crack, then freezes, expands, and pries the masonry wider. Repeat that cycle all winter in Lombard and bricks start to spall, crowns split, and mortar crumbles. We check the crown, joints and flashing on every inspection and point out damage early.
Idle through humid summers
A gas fireplace in Lombard can sit unused from spring through a humid summer, and the off months are not restful — dust settles in the pilot, insects and debris reach the burner, and moisture works on contacts and valves. That is why so many units refuse the first cold evening in October until they are serviced.
Raccoons & birds in the flue
An open flue in the off-season is shelter. Raccoons, birds and squirrels nest in chimneys across DuPage County in spring and summer, and a nest blocks draft, holds moisture, and can push smoke and carbon monoxide into the room if a fire is lit under it. We clear blockages and fit screened caps.

My gas fireplace quit on the coldest night — why does that happen?+
Deep cold is when the fireplace works hardest and when a marginal part finally fails. A thermocouple worn thin, a thermopile putting out too little voltage, or a pilot orifice narrowed by dust can all hold through a mild week and drop out in a cold snap. We test each part in order and replace only what failed.
What does freeze-thaw actually do to a chimney?+
Water soaks into a crown, a mortar joint or porous brick, then freezes and expands, prying the opening wider each time. Over a few Midwest winters that cycle spalls brick faces, splits crowns, and crumbles mortar joints, and the gaps let more water in. Catching it early is a repair; ignoring it becomes a rebuild.
My pilot lights but will not stay lit — what is failing?+
Usually the thermocouple or thermopile. Those sensors sit in the pilot flame and prove heat before the main burner is allowed gas; when they wear out, the valve shuts the pilot down as a safety measure. Dust in the pilot orifice can starve the flame and cause the same symptom, so we clean and test before replacing parts.
How do I know if my clay tile flue liner is cracked?+
From the room, usually you cannot — cracked tiles are inside the flue, above the firebox. Signs can include smoke smell in upstairs rooms, pieces of tile in the firebox, or a fireplace that drafts poorly after years of good service. An inspection with a flue camera shows the tile condition directly and gives you a plain-language report.
We burn wood all winter. How real is the chimney fire risk?+
Real enough that cleaning is scheduled around it. Creosote builds on flue walls with every fire, and a hot fire or a stray spark can ignite the glazed layer, turning the flue itself into a fire that cracks liners and damages masonry. Annual cleaning, burning dry wood, and keeping fires hot rather than smoldering all lower the risk.
Do you give prices over the phone?+
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
