Most Monument no-light calls trace back to elevation — a pilot that will not stay lit, a thermocouple working too hard in thin air, or a unit never adjusted for the altitude it lives at. We find the exact cause on the spot.
Repair, cleaning, inspection, installation and maintenance for Monument — gas units adjusted for elevation, wood fireplaces and stoves cleaned and checked, and cabins opened up safely after months sitting empty.
RepairFireplace Repair
Any fireplace, any failure — diagnosed first, then fixed with the right parts. In Monument that often means a pilot, thermocouple or venting setup that was never adjusted for elevation.
Our specialty at elevation — and the most common no-light call in Monument homes. Pilot that won't stay lit, dead remote, weak or lazy flame: gas systems diagnosed safely and repaired to code.
Soot, dust and that stale closed-up smell removed from the firebox, glass and burner — the clean that takes a fireplace from a hard winter of daily burning to ready for the next cold snap.
Firebox, flue, venting and controls checked end to end, with a plain-language report. One visit, one honest report — what is sound, what is not, and what can wait.
The annual service that keeps a Monument gas fireplace lighting first try: full clean, burner and pilot service, safety sensors tested, and a test fire before we leave. Built for Monument's pattern: hard daily burning all winter, then months sitting idle.

Local conditions
Monument fireplaces have mountain problems
A fireplace in Monument works at elevation, in dry cold and wide temperature swings few other regions see. Altitude, pine smoke, snow and long idle months in second homes do the damage here — this is what we check on every visit.
Altitude changes the burn
Gas burns differently in thin air. At Monument's elevation, pilot flames run weaker, thermocouples work harder, and venting has to be set up for altitude — a unit adjusted for sea level will soot, struggle and quit early. We check the altitude setup on every gas call, not just the broken part.
Snow load on caps and vents
Heavy snow sits on caps, bends lightweight covers, and can bury low vent terminations on direct-vent units in El Paso County. A buried or crushed vent means poor draft, soot and shutdowns right when you need heat most. After big storms we check caps and terminations first — before assuming a part inside has failed.
Wildfire smoke days
Late-summer smoke changes how Monument burns. On bad air days, wood burning is restricted and discouraged, and many homeowners lean on gas instead — which is why gas units that sat unused all summer get found out in the smoke season, not winter. We service both, so whichever fuel you rely on is ready.
Wood heat is serious heat
In mountain and foothill homes, a wood stove or fireplace is often a primary heat source, not an occasional pleasure fire. That means longer burns, more ash, faster wear on gaskets, baffles and catalysts, and no patience for a unit that underperforms. In El Paso County we service wood units like the heaters they are.

How often should a wood fireplace or stove be cleaned here?+
At least once a year if you burn regularly — and sooner if wood heat is a main heat source. Pine and other local softwoods lay down creosote quickly, and slow overnight burns make it worse. In Monument, daily burners can build a risky layer in a single season, so do not stretch cleanings to every other year.
Does a gas fireplace need special setup for high elevation?+
Yes. Gas appliances are rated and adjusted for an elevation range, and a unit set up for low elevation will burn dirty, soot the glass, and struggle to keep a pilot at Monument elevation. The gas and air setup has to match the altitude it will actually run at — we check and adjust that as part of any installation or repair.
Can I burn wood on wildfire smoke days?+
Follow the local air-quality guidance for that day — on bad smoke days, wood burning is restricted or strongly discouraged across much of Colorado, and adding fireplace smoke to wildfire smoke helps nobody. Many Monument homeowners switch to gas on those days instead. If your gas unit has sat idle, have it serviced before you need to rely on it.
Why does my fireplace smoke into the room on cold mornings?+
Usually a cold flue. Overnight mountain cold fills the flue with heavy, sinking air, and the first smoke cannot push it up — so it spills into the room until the flue warms. A blocked cap or snow around the vent makes it worse. A tech checks the flue, cap and draft, and shows you a startup routine that warms the flue first.
There are cracks in my chimney crown — is that urgent at elevation?+
Worth fixing promptly, yes. A cracked crown lets water into the masonry, and at Monument elevation that water freezes hard, expands, and widens the crack every cycle — small crown damage becomes split masonry faster here than in mild climates. We repair the crown and check the cap and flashing in the same visit, before water reaches the flue.
Do you give prices over the phone?+
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every fireplace fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
